Chandratal Lake – The Moon Lake of Spiti Valley
Chandratal, meaning "Moon Lake" in Hindi, is one of the most breathtaking high-altitude lakes in India. Sitting at 4,300 metres above sea level in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, it is a crescent-shaped glacial lake surrounded by barren mountains and pristine wilderness.
The lake gets its name from its crescent moon shape when viewed from above. Its crystal-clear blue-green waters reflect the surrounding peaks, making it one of the most photographed destinations in the Himalayas.
Chandratal is one of the best spots in India for stargazing and astrophotography
🗓️ Best Time to Visit
Chandratal is accessible only from June to mid-October, when the roads are clear of snow. The ideal months are:
- June–July — Snow still visible on surrounding peaks, wildflowers in bloom
- August–September — Best weather, clear skies, perfect for camping
- Early October — Autumn colours, fewer tourists, roads close soon after
💡 Tip: Stay overnight at the campsite near Chandratal for spectacular stargazing. The lack of light pollution at 4,300m makes it one of the best spots in India to see the Milky Way.
🚗 How to Reach Chandratal
There are two main routes to Chandratal Lake:
- From Manali — via Rohtang Pass → Gramphoo → Batal → Chandratal (120 km, 6–7 hours)
- From Kaza (Spiti) — via Losar → Batal → Chandratal (70 km, 3–4 hours)
From Batal, there is a 14 km off-road track to the lake. The last 6 km must be done on foot or with a 4x4 vehicle. It's advisable to hire a local taxi or join a guided trip from Manali or Kaza.
The meadows around Chandratal are ideal for camping under the open sky
🌡️ Altitude Warning: At 4,300m, altitude sickness is common. Acclimatise in Manali or Kaza for 1–2 days before visiting. Carry medication like Diamox if needed.
